SAVANNAH, Ga.--More than 170 men’s and women’s tennis players competed this weekend in the 2005 ITA Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University. Twenty teams representing the Peach Belt Conference and the Carolinas-Virginias Athletic Conference participated in the various matches. USC Aiken did not come away with any championships but did show their ability to keep up with the best teams in the region.

The four-day event was divided into men’s and women’s singles/doubles matches and “B” draw singles/doubles. The winners of each group advanced to the next rounds, while a loss meant more play in up to three rounds of consolation play. The championships in all four events were held Monday morning.

Otavia Bastos played well in “B” draw singles, beating Lauren Harris (MOC) 6-3,6-0 in the second round. Sarah Hickman (FMU) defeated Bastos 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.

Fernando Guevara and Carlos Huerta competed in men’s doubles play until the quarterfinals where they were defeated 8-4 by #4 Jendelund/Roos (AASU), who went on to win the men’s doubles championship.

Renan Constantino continued through three rounds of men’s singles “B” draw matches until falling to Brandon Simmons (Barton) 6-4,6-7,6-4. The women also played well with three players making it to the third round of singles consolation play, including Myra Kaefer, Elly Toth and Dominique Cassetori. Toth went to the consolation semifinals before being defeated by Gabby Acuna (GCSU) 6-4,6-3.

Armstrong Atlantic took the championships in both men’s and women’s doubles and women’s singles. Kevin Taylor, the #1 ranked singles player from Francis Marion, was the men’s singles champion. The winners advance to the 2005 ITA Small College National Championships in Ft. Meyers, Fla., on October 13-16.

The women’s tennis team will travel to Augusta, Ga., on Oct. 7-9 and both the men and the women will be in Milledgeville, Ga., on Oct. 14-16.
