AIKEN, S.C.--Newberry College
(6-3-1) put three points on the board in the last 15 minutes, shutting
out USC Aiken (3-5-0) 5-0. The loss extends the Pacers winless streak
to five games and ties the series with Newberry 4-4-0 overall.
A tight race in the first half inched a 1-0 lead in Newberry’s
favor after Freshman Alie Brady (19) fed the ball from a corner kick
to senior midfielder
Katherine Prete (12) for the score. The Lady Pacers were held to just one shot
on goal made by senior midfielder Natasha DaCosta (11) before the horn blew
to end the
first half.
Pacer defense held strong for the first 30 minutes of the second half
and the offense produced four shots on goal but it wasn’t enough
to overcome a strong Newberry drive.
The first of a four-goal run came from midfielder Lacey Moskos (3) who passed
off the ball quickly to forward Inga Woiwode (9) where the ball sailed over the
head of freshman goalkeeper Jacquelynn Hart (1). The next goal came from sophomore
Brooke Tumblin (8) who was assisted by freshman Najla Bubtana (23). The last
two goals were less than three minutes apart with five minutes to go in the game.
Red-shirt freshman Mandi Butler (16) passed off to sophomore Ashleigh Mayer (14)
who quickly scored. Butler would go on to score with 2:20 on the clock after
an assist from freshman Shannon Carosone (22).
Hart made seven great stops for the Pacers and Johanna Rathbun (0) saved four
for the Lady Indians.
The Pacers will look for a win in a Peach Belt Conference match up this Saturday,
October 1 at 1p.m., against the Lady Cougars of Columbus State.
