FLORENCE, S.C.--USC Aiken
held the top scoring team in the Peach Belt Conference to just two goals,
but couldn’t get its own offense going and fell to Francis Marion
University, 2-0, today in a match-up of women’s soccer teams in
Florence, S.C. Francis Marion (8-3-0, 4-1-0 PBC) scored early and Francis
Marion scored late, but the Patriots didn’t score often thanks
to USC Aiken (1-9-2, 0-5-0) goalkeeper Shannon Hobbs who kept the Lady
Pacers in the game.
The Patriots entered the game averaging a PBC best 3.30 goals per match but scored
only two goals against Hobbs and her teammates. The first score came quickly
when Katie Riley put one in the net, just two and a half minutes into the game,
to give FMU an early 1-0 advantage. Thanks to Hobbs, the score remained 1-0 until
Riley found the net again with just 30 seconds remaining in the match.
In between those two goals, Hobbs saw the Patriots attempt 21 shots, 10 of which
were on goal. The senior made eight saves in her 90 minutes of play.
USCA, shutout for the sixth time in its last eight matches, attempted just one
shot, coming off the foot of Jodi Kulinitch. Riley led FMU with nine shot attempts
and Ashley Fortune added five shots and an assist.
The Lady Pacers will step out of Peach Belt Conference play when they travel
to face Newberry College on Wednesday in Newberry, S.C. The match is scheduled
to begin at 2:00 p.m.
