MORROW, Ga.--USC Aiken
ended its two-game scoreless streak, but Clayton State’s Olaitan
Yusuf scored a Peach Belt Conference record five goals as the Lady Lakers
(6-3-1, 1-2-1 PBC) defeated the Lady Pacer soccer squad, 5-2, today in
Morrow, Ga. USCA falls to 1-7-2 overall and 0-4-0 in Peach Belt play.
Yusuf’s five goals tied the PBC record for most goals in a game, but set
a new record for most goals in a Peach Belt Conference match. USC Aiken’s
Jodi Kulinitch and Francis Marion’s Katie Roberts have each scored five
goals in a non-conference game. Yusuf broke USC Upstate’s Thea Moen’s
record of four goals in a conference match set against Clayton State on Oct.
23, 2001.
Yusuf started the scoring at the 8:20 mark when she took a pass from Nkiru Okosieme
and beat the USC Aiken goalkeeper from 15 yards out. Just one minute and 14 seconds
later, USCA’s two-game scoreless streak came to an end when Natasha DaCosta
scored off of a deflected pass from Meg Newton to tie the game at 1-1. The goal
was DaCosta’s fifth of the season.
Clayton State took a 2-1 lead at the 15:07 mark when Yusuf’s shot off of
a long pass from Lairin King found the upper right corner of the goal. The Lady
Lakers took the one goal lead into the locker room at the break.
The score remained close until the PBC’s newest record holder scored her
third and fourth goals in a period of seven minutes midway through the second
period. Audie Beckman was able to close the gap for USC Aiken when she scored
her fifth goal of the season on a free kick from 18 yards out, with just under
15 minutes remaining, but the Lady Pacers would get no closer.
Yusuf put across the record-breaking goal at the 77:03 mark when she directed
a pass from Jill Kowalczyk into the right side of the goal. In all, Yusuf
attempted 12 shots in the match, seven of which were on goal. Beckman and
DaCosta attempted five shots each to lead USCA.
Loreta Ashu picked up the win in goal for Clayton State. Ashu saved four shots
in 90 minutes of play. Shannon Hobbs made eight saves for USC Aiken.
The Lady Pacers will step out of Peach Belt Conference play when they host
Brescia University on Thursday at “Pacer Pit” on the USCA campus.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
