AIKEN,
S.C.--Shannon Reid has been named the next women’s basketball
assistant coach at USC Aiken, head coach Mike Brandt announced Friday
morning. The former Pfeiffer standout takes over for Dana Richter,
who resigned for personal reasons in early August, and will serve as
interim assistant coach for the 2004-05 season.
“I am very excited to have Shannon on our staff,” said Brandt, 33-27
in two years at the helm. “She seems to be a very positive person and will
relate well to the players. Her recommendations were excellent and I expect great
things from her.”
Most recently Reid played professionally, from October 2003 until March 2004,
in Dublin, Ireland as the only American on a team in the Dart Killester Super
League. She was third on her team in scoring in helping them to the Cup Finals.
While in Ireland, Reid served as the head coach of the Mosney Ladies Club team.
After beginning her collegiate career at Lenoir-Rhyne, Reid transferred to
Pfeiffer University where she became a three-year starter for the Falcons.
As a junior,
Reid averaged 15.7 ppg and was named First-Team All-CVAC (Carolinas-Virginia
Athletic Conference). As a senior, she led her team to a 24-5 overall record
as the Falcons won back-to-back CVAC Championships with an 18-2 record. For
her efforts, Reid, who averaged 14.3 ppg that season, was named the 2003 CVAC
Player
of the Year as well as Pfeiffer University’s “Female Athlete of the
Year”.
After graduating with her Bachelor’s of Arts in Sports Management from
Pfeiffer in May 2003, Reid was named assistant women’s basketball coach
at Saint Andrews College. In her one season before leaving to play professional
basketball, Reid assisted with recruiting efforts, film exchange, scouting
reports, as well as supervised study hall.
“Shannon had a great college career and playing professionally overseas
had to be a great learning experience which will aid her in coaching,” said
Brandt.
At USC Aiken, Reid will coordinate recruiting, manage film exchange, and oversee
the Lady Pacers academic and community outreach programs.
The Lady Pacers return seven letterwinners off last year’s 14-14 team
that finished 6-10 in the Peach Belt Conference. USCA will open the 2004-05
season by participating in the Eighth Annual Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic,
November 5-7 in Orlando, Fla.
