 AIKEN, S.C.--After decisive wins in games
one and two for the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (5-2), USC
Aiken (4-5) battled back to win game three before falling 33-31 in game
four as UPR-RP took the non-conference volleyball match 3-1. It was the
2005 home opener for the Lady Pacers. Game scores were 30-22, 30-19,
26-30, and 33-31.
Mandy Gerolstein led the Lady Pacers with 18 kills and three blocks hitting .485
for the match. Laura Williams added 11 kills and a team-high six blocks for 14.5
total points. Veronica Seidle tallied 16 digs while Rachel Dalitz and Cheryl
Barcas combined for 46 assists and 22 digs.
Alexandra Rosado paced UPR-RP registering 25 kills and five blocks hitting .500.
Myrlena Lopez added 13 kills and a match-best nine blocks while Maridela Diaz
chipped in 12 kills and 11 digs.
Tied 2-2 to open the match, Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras used an early knockout blow
in the form of a 12-1 run to seize control of game one 14-3. USCA got within
25-19 on a service ace by Dalitz, but UPR-RP pulled away to the 30-22 win.
It was a pair of 9-3 runs that propelled UPR-RP to the game two victory including
the latter at 21-15.
Gerolstein and Seidle rang up five kills each for the Lady Pacers in game three
as USC Aiken fought back for the 30-26 win. A 5-0 run broke open a 3-3 contest,
but a game that featured 11 ties and six lead changes witnessed UPR-RP reclaim
the lead at 19-18 on a USCA attacking error. A Williams’ kill and a Danielle
Spice ace, however, put the Lady Pacers back in front to stay.
Game four saw the two play tight, this time with 14 ties and no team ever leading
by more than three points. Trailing 27-24, USCA got three kills and a Gerolstein
solo block to tie the game at 29-29. Down 32-31, UPR-RP got one of their 18.0
team blocks for the game and match victory.
USC Aiken will host Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras again tomorrow at 7:30 PM.
