AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken’s Laura Williams
has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the
Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. It is the first
career selection for Williams, the 13th under sixth-year head coach Will
Condon, and the 24th in the program’s 15-year NCAA history.
The 5-11 junior from Six Mile, S.C. led the Lady Pacers against four top opponents
this week averaging 3.12 kills and 1.12 blocks per game hitting .294. In back-to-back
matches with the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, Williams averaged 13
kills and 5.5 blocks per match as USC Aiken went 1-1.
Williams’ most impressive performance of the week came on Saturday at the
2005 AASU Volleyball Clash. In a hard-fought 3-1 loss to #7 Tampa, Williams had
10 kills and one block while hitting an amazing .529 against the perennial Division
II volleyball power. She finished off her week with a 14-kill, six-block match
against West Georgia hitting .387.
“Laura did an excellent job of reading the defenses and making adjustments
from game to game,” said Condon, who is one win shy of tying the C.J. Sherman
for most victories in school history. “Her performance against Tampa was
very impressive. To frustrate the number seven team in the country that much
says a lot about the kind of player she is.”
Currently, Williams leads the Peach Belt Conference in hitting percentage at
.299. She is also third in blocks at 1.08 per game and is 10th in kills per game
at 2.71.
With 50 kills and 18 blocks this week, Williams moved over the 500-kill and 200-block
plateaus for her career.
