SAVANNAH, Ga.--USC Aiken (5-7) put a serious
scare into seventh-ranked Tampa (9-2) before falling 3-1 in non-conference
volleyball action on Saturday night in Savannah, Ga. In the nightcap
at the 2005 Armstrong Atlantic State Volleyball Clash, the Lady Pacers
suffered a 3-0 setback to West Georgia (10-5). Game scores versus Tampa
were 30-18, 30-17, 27-30, and 30-27. Games scores with West Georgia were
31-29, 30-27, and 35-33.
After slipping into an 0-2 hole versus the Lady Spartans, USC Aiken shocked the
nation’s seventh-ranked team and perennial volleyball powerhouse by claiming
game three 30-27. Showing the game three win was not a fluke, the Lady Pacers
battled Tampa to the limit in game four before falling 30-27. USCA has never
beaten Tampa in seven tries, but the game three win was a first in nine years
for the Lady Pacers.
Katie Baker led three Lady Pacers in double figures in kills with 14. Laura Williams
tallied 10 kills and an impressive .529 hitting percentage while Missy Deardorff
added 10 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Jasmine Edney came off the bench to
record a career-high six kills, five digs, and one ace hitting .444.
Rachel Dalitz registered 29 assists while Veronica Seidle had 13 digs to go with
six kills. As a team, USC Aiken hit .215 but was held to 3.0 team blocks.
Kayla Mora and Katelen Dixon each had 13 kills to lead Tampa. As a team, the
Lady Spartans hit .348 and totaled 6.0 team blocks.
In the three-game loss to West Georgia, USC Aiken was led by Williams and Mandy
Gerolstein combining for 26 of the team’s 45 kills. Williams hit .387 with
14 kills and a game-high six blocks while Gerolstein added 12 kills and three
blocks hitting .440. Danielle Spice recorded 20 digs at the libero position while
Dalitz and Cheryl Barcas combined for 42 assists and five aces.
USC Aiken returns home to host Lander University in both team’s Peach Belt
Conference opener on Friday, September 23 at 7:00 PM.
