AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken’s Jenny Lloyd
has been selected as the first Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Player
of the Week for the 2004 season, the conference office announced Tuesday
afternoon. It is Lloyd’s second career selection, the 10th under
fifth-year head coach Will Condon, and the 21st in the program’s
14-year NCAA history.
The 5-11 senior from Fife, Wash. led the Lady Pacers to a 7-1 start to the season,
equaling the program’s best start in school history. After opening the
season 1-1 following a 3-1 loss to Carson-Newman at the Joseph B. DuRant Invitational,
USCA has won six-straight including impressive wins over Wingate, Eckerd, and
a 3-0 blanking of defending South Atlantic Conference champion Presbyterian.
Lloyd averaged 5.14 kills, 3.86 digs, 0.59 aces, and 0.38 blocks per game over
the voting period, the first two weeks of the season. She had double-digit kill
totals in every match and had double doubles in kills and digs in seven of the
eight matches.
“Jenny had an excellent first two weeks in all facets of her game,” said
Condon. “This is a small reward for the work she did in the spring to prepare
mentally and physically for the season. I always look at these as team awards.
Without Rachel’s [Dalitz] sets, Karen’s [McClellan] digs, and Veronica’s
[Seidle] passes, this award would not be possible.”
In a dramatic 3-2 win over Wingate, Lloyd rang up her fourth career 30+ kill
performance with 31 kills, 23 digs, two blocks, and a .300 hitting percentage.
Lloyd also had 16 kills and hit .441 in the win over Presbyterian and registered
22 kills and a .425 hitting percentage in the victory against Eckerd.
With her 149 kills to open the season, Lloyd passed Sofie Hakansson (1999-2002)
of Armstrong Atlantic State by one kill for sixth place on the Peach Belt Conference’s
career kills list. She also moved past Jayme Hodges (1994-97) into second place
on USCA’s career kills list. Lloyd trails school and conference record
holder Kim Merrill (1994-97) by 512 kills.
