AIKEN, S.C.--Senior Jenny Lloyd recorded
16 kills and an impressive .441 hitting percentage as the USC Aiken Lady
Pacers (4-1) blanked Presbyterian College (2-3) 3-0 in non-conference
volleyball action Tuesday night at “The Courthouse”. Game
scores were 30-27, 30-25, and 30-25. It was the home opener for USCA.
The win snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Blue Hose as the Lady Pacers
are off to their best start since opening the 2000 season 7-1.
Lloyd added three service aces, 13 digs, and three blocks for a match-high 21.5
points. Freshman Veronica Seidle added 14 kills and 10 digs while newcomer Karen
McClellan provided stellar defense from the libero position with 23 digs.
Donja Bobbitt paced PC with 14 kills and 15 digs. Allyn Beam chipped in 12 kills
while Erin Friday tallied 11 kills.
In game one, a Lloyd kill gave USCA its largest lead of the game at 12-8. After
a Beam kill for PC and a Lady Pacer attack error knotted the game up at 16-16,
the two teams traded points until the final tie came at 21-21. Sophomore Laura
Williams, who hit .538 with eight kills on the evening, put one away to give
USCA a lead it would not relinquish at 22-21 as they took game one 30-27.
Game two witnessed a strong start by the Blue Hose as five straight kills opened
up a 9-3 advantage. But trailing 10-4, a young Lady Pacer squad showed their
resolve with a 6-0 run to tie the game up. Freshman Mandy Gerolstein recorded
a kill to give USCA its first lead of the game and ignited a 5-0 spurt to make
it 19-15. Tied 23-23, Lloyd registered two kills and two blocks down the stretch
as the Lady Pacers took game two 30-25.
Presbyterian again grabbed the early lead in game three with a 6-1 start, but
a Lloyd ace pulled her team even at 11-11. The decisive run of the game came
with USCA trailing 17-14. A 6-0 flurry fueled by one kill and a pair of aces
from Seidle put the Lady Pacers ahead to stay 19-17 as they went on to win 30-25.
The Lady Pacers will return to action this weekend when they host the USC Aiken
Tournament on Friday and Saturday, September 3-4. USCA will square off against
Eckerd College at 7:00 PM on Friday. Presbyterian travels to Newberry, S.C.
to open South Atlantic Conference play against the Lady Indians on Wednesday,
