Cox Inks Walsh to National Letter of Intent
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team and head coach Glenn Cox announced the signing of Sheila Walsh to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, April 20.
Walsh joins Heather Granger (Greenville, S.C.) and Hannah Tierney (Winchester, Va.) as newcomers to the squad for the 2011 season.
A setter, Walsh comes to Aiken out of Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, S.C. She played her club volleyball with Carolina Juniors, Midlands Volleyball Club and the Rock Hill Volleyball Club.
"I am thrilled to be adding a setter of Sheila's quality," mused Cox. "She is a great all-around student-athlete and a tremendous all-around volleyball player. She will compete immediately for our quarterback position."
A team captain for Nation Ford, Walsh helped guide the Falcons to their first state championship in the 2010 season. For her efforts she was chosen as the Nation Ford Volleyball Player of the Year for her senior year.
A two-time All-Region performer, Walsh earned All-Tournament laurels at the Nation Ford Invitational and the Eastside Invitational.
Walsh is the all-time assist leader in Nation Ford history. A three-year starter for Nation Ford, she was named to the 2010 South Carolina North/South All-Star game.
She led the Maxpreps.com South Carolina ranking for overall assists and assists per game in a 2009 season that saw the junior earn the Coaches Award at Nation Ford following the conclusion of the season.
Walsh averaged 8.8 assists (774 total) as a junior and 8.4 assists (724 total) as a senior.
Walsh has been on the A/B Honor Roll four times at Nation Ford. This past year she was voted the Most Original for her senior class.
Walsh joins a solid returning nucleus for Cox's volleyball squad that graduates only one senior after making it all the way to the semifinal round of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The 2010 Pacers finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-16 while wrapping up the regular season fourth in the extremely tough PBC.
