Cox Officially Releases 2010 USC Aiken Volleyball Schedule

2010 USC Aiken Volleyball Schedule

AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken head volleyball coach Glenn Cox officially released the 2010 USC Aiken volleyball schedule on Monday, June 14, 2010.

The 2010 USC Aiken volleyball schedule features the Pacers taking part in three regular season tournaments and a full Peach Belt Conference slate, which includes two matches against each PBC volleyball institution. The USC Aiken volleyball program will host two regular season tournaments at the Convocation Center. The first USC Aiken volleyball tournament will take place Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11, while the second tournament at the Convocation Center will be contested on Friday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 23.

The USC Aiken volleyball team will commence the 2010 regular season by participating in the Lees-McRae volleyball tournament on Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4.

The Pacers will open the tournament with a match against tournament host and 2009 Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament champion Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3. The Pacers own a 3-1 all-time series lead over Lees-McRae. USC Aiken will close out its first day of its season-opening tournament against defending Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament champion Flagler at 7 p.m. The match against the 2009 NCAA Division II final four program will be the fifth all-time between the programs with the series currently tied at 2-2. The two teams split their season series last year with the Pacers earning a 3-2 win over the Saints at the Convocation Center on Sept. 18, 2009.

The Pacers will continue the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 4 with its first match against Palm Beach Atlantic since 2006 at 10 a.m. USC Aiken will then close out the Lees-McRae Tournament at 3:30 p.m. against in-state rival Coker. The Pacers have never fallen to the Cobras, owning a 3-0 all-time series lead.

The Pacers will return home the next weekend for the first of its two home regular season tournaments on Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11. The Pacers’ first game of the tournament will also serve as their inaugural Peach Belt Conference tilt of the 2010 campaign. The USC Aiken-Montevallo showdown will take place at 3 p.m. on Sept. 10. The Pacers will be looking for their first ever victory over Montevallo in the match. Shortly after the Montevallo match, USC Aiken will square off against Anderson at 7 p.m. USC Aiken and Anderson will be playing for the first time since 2007, but USC Aiken owns a 2-0 all-time series lead.

The Pacers will open the second day of their home tournament by welcoming fledgling Conference Carolinas school Erskine to the Convocation Center for a 12 p.m. match on Sept. 11. Erskine is only in its second year back from a 12-year hiatus of college volleyball. The Pacers and Flying Fleet have not tangled against one another since 1996, but USC Aiken has never lost to Erskine, having won all five prior meetings. The Pacers’ time in their home event will close with a 4 p.m. match on Saturday against Cox’s alma mater in Valdosta State.

The Pacers will begin the single match portion of their schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 15 with a home match against Peach Belt Conference foe Lander. The 7 p.m. match against the Bearcats will be the 26th meeting between the two league rivals with the Pacers holding a commanding 20-5 lead in the series.

The Pacers will hit the road the same weekend for a tough Peach Belt Conference two-match road swing that begins with a contest against Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. Just one day later, USC Aiken will travel up the road just a bit to Savannah, Ga. for a match against former Pacer mentor Will Condon and Armstrong Atlantic State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.

USC Aiken will have the next six days off before returning to league play, beginning with a home match against league and in-state rival Francis Marion at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24. Just one day later, USC Aiken will welcome UNC Pembroke to the Convocation Center for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Pacers own the series advantage against both foes with the Pacers clinging to a 26-17 lead in the series with Francis Marion. USC Aiken is 39-9 all-time against UNC Pembroke.

The Pacers will close the first month of the 2010 regular season against rival Augusta State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Christenberry Fieldhouse in Augusta, Ga. The Pacers and Jaguars will be playing for the 44th time with USC Aiken owning a 34-9 all-time series lead.

The month of October will begin with a special event as the Pacers will play Catawba at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Student Activities Center on the USC Aiken main campus. The Pacers’ match against the Indians at their old facility will be a part of Flashback Friday. One day later, USC Aiken will welcome NAIA institution Embry-Riddle to the Convocation Center for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The match against the Eagles of Embry-Riddle comes just days before another match against NCAA Division III power and 2008 national champion Emory at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7. The match against the two Eagles will sandwich in a PBC match against Lander at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

USC Aiken will have eight days off after their match with Division III power Emory. They will then hit the road for a season-long three-match road swing. The Pacers will open the road swing with a match against league foe Francis Marion on Friday, Oct. 15 in Florence, S.C. One day later, USC Aiken will play league foe UNC Pembroke as well as Elizabeth City State in Pembroke, N.C. The two-match day begins at 11 a.m. with the Pacers’ playing a league match against UNC Pembroke. They will then square off against Elizabeth City State at 1 p.m.

The next weekend, USC Aiken will host the second of its two regular season tournaments. The Pacers will open the tournament on Friday, Oct. 22 against St. Andrews at 3 p.m. The Knights will be playing in a USC Aiken regular season tournament for the second consecutive season. The Pacers own a 5-0 all-time series lead over St. Andrews. After the St. Andrews match, USC Aiken will close out the first day of the tournament at the Convocation Center against King at 7 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between USC Aiken and King.

The second day of the tournament will begin with USC Aiken once again taking on a first time opponent in Davis & Elkins at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. The day will conclude with the Pacers taking on Coker for the second time in a tournament on the season at 4 p.m. on Oct. 23.

The Pacers will play their final non-conference match of the 2010 regular season next against the Wolves of Newberry at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 in Newberry, S.C.

USC Aiken will conclude the 2010 regular season with three of its final four matches being played in the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The final stretch of USC Aiken’s regular season begins with Flagler and Armstrong Atlantic State playing matches against the Pacers at the Convocation Center. Last year, USC Aiken earned victories over the PBC powers at the Convocation Center.

The Pacers will first play Flagler at 7 p.m. before tangling with the Pirates at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Pacers will close their regular season matches at home on Wednesday, Nov. 3 against rival Augusta State. The match is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. USC Aiken’s regular season will end with the Pacers traveling to Montevallo, Ala. for a 5 p.m. match on Friday, Nov. 5.

The 2009 USC Aiken volleyball team finished the season with a 15-18 record, going 5-9 in Peach Belt Conference play. USC Aiken hosted the 2009 PBC Volleyball Championships for the first time in the Convocation Center. The Pacers entered the tournament as the fifth seeded team.

USC Aiken acquired victories over both of the teams who would eventually meet for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship. The Pacers were the only team to beat Flagler in league play as the Pacers downed the Saints, 3-2, at the Convocation Center on Friday, Sept. 18. USC Aiken just one day later, was one of just two teams in the Peach Belt Conference to down the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic during the regular season, acquiring a 3-1 win over AASU on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Convocation Center.

The Pacers were ranked as high as No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings. USC Aiken was the second highest ranked Peach Belt Conference squad with Flagler ranked one spot higher than the Pacers in second. Armstrong Atlantic was one spot lower than the Pacers in fourth. The Pacers won eight of 10 games from Sept. 4 through Sept. 19. Flagler would advance all the way to the Final Four of the 2009 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship.
