USC Aiken Claims Third Straight Victory With League Win Over UNCP
AIKEN, S.C. – The USC Aiken women’s team won its third straight match with a resounding 8-1 win over Peach Belt Conference foe UNC Pembroke on Friday afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
USC Aiken’s current three-match winning streak moves the Pacers back to .500 on the season at 9-9. USC Aiken is now 4-7 in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference.
UNC Pembroke with the loss to the Pacers on Friday afternoon dropped to 9-11 overall, which includes a 2-7 mark in the PBC.
USC Aiken commenced Friday’s league win over UNC Pembroke by sweeping doubles rather easily.
The Pacers’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England/Sir John Lawes) and Maria Angel (Rosario, Argentina/San Juan Bautista de la Salle) continued their winning ways with an 8-3 victory over UNC Pembroke’s No. 2 singles duo of Mia Winterbottom and Meredith Pierson. The win was the third straight for Humphrey and Angel. The pair is presently 7-4 in PBC play.
The Pacers claimed a victory at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. All five wins were in straight sets.
Angel and Humphrey along with teammate Brittany Telford (Newmarket, Canada/Huron Heights) all won their third straight singles match in the team win over UNC Pembroke. Telford became the second Pacer to reach double digit wins in the 2010 season with her 6-1, 6-0 win over UNC Pembroke’s Marciel Quintero at No. 4 singles. She is now 10-8 on the season.
Telford joins Angel as the only Pacers with double digit wins on the year. Angel is 12-5 overall on the year.
The USC Aiken men’s and women’s tennis teams will close the curtains on the week tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against Peach Belt Conference foe Francis Marion on Saturday, April 3 at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
