Pacers Storm Past Hurricanes

AIKEN, S.C. – The USC Aiken men’s and women’s tennis teams made short order of Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia Southwestern at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon. 
 
The Pacer women bested Georgia Southwestern 8-1, while the Pacer men downed the Hurricanes 9-0.
 
The USC Aiken women improved to 7-9 on the 2010 season with the win over the Hurricanes. The 17th-ranked USC Aiken men moved to 8-9 on the year with the win over Georgia Southwestern. The Pacer women are now 3-7 on the year in the Peach Belt Conference. USC Aiken’s men’s tennis team is 2-6 in Peach Belt Conference action in 2010 after the rout of Georgia Southwestern on Monday.
 
Both the Georgia Southwestern women (0-10) and Georgia Southwestern men (0-7) remain winless in PBC play with the loss to the Pacers. The Hurricane women are now 5-14 overall and the Hurricane men 3-11 on the season after the loss to the nationally-ranked Pacers.
 
The lone loss for the USC Aiken women on Monday came at No. 1 singles. The Pacer women won the rest of its five singles points in straight sets with three of the five points coming on 6-0, 6-0 decision. USC Aiken’s Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England/Sir John Lawes) at No. 2 singles, Maria Angel (Rosario, Argentina/San Juan Bautista de la Salle) at No. 3 singles and Ida Sandberg (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) at No. 6 singles all claimed the perfect victories.
 
In men’s action, USC Aiken’s doubles tandem of Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Sergio D'Amorim) and Juan Xavier Ponce (Miami, Fla. /Drury University) continued their torrid play of late with a perfect 8-0 win over Georgia Southwestern’s No. 1 doubles team of Victor Piñones-Haltenhoff and Ryan Bartz. The Pacer duo has now won 10 straight matches to own an impressive mark of 14-3 overall.
 
The Pacer men would claim all six singles matches in straight sets.
 
The USC Aiken women will travel to Due West, S.C. to square off with the nationally-ranked Erskine Flying Fleet at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30.
 
Two days later, USC Aiken’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face off against NCAA Division I South Carolina State at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 1. One day later, the Pacer women will welcome UNC Pembroke to the USC Aiken Tennis Complex for a 2 p.m. match on Friday, April 2.
 
The Pacer tennis teams will close the curtains on the week with a 10 a.m. match against Peach Belt Conference foe Francis Marion on Saturday, April 3.
