Three-Match Winning Streak for Pacers Snapped in Home Loss to Lakers

AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken’s three-match winning streak
was snapped in a 9-0 loss to 11th-ranked Clayton State on Friday
afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
The loss drops the Pacers to 5-6 on the 2010 season. USC Aiken is
now 1-4 in the Peach Belt Conference. Clayton State with the
victory improves to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the PBC.
Clayton State was the first team to knock off the Pacers at their
home facility in 2010. The Pacers, who are now 2-1 inside the
friendly confines of the USC Aiken Tennis Complex this season, had
previously been undefeated on their home courts with wins over
Wingate and Montevallo.
The Pacers were unable to really place themselves into things in
doubles, but the Pacers made things a lot harder for the
nationally-ranked Lakers in singles.
Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England/Sir John Lawes) opened her
No. 2 singles match with regionally 12th-ranked Viktoriya
Seyrodenko by earning a 6-4 win in the first set. Seyrodenko would
eventually earn the overall victory (4-6, 6-2, 10-8), but she was
pushed to the limit by Humphrey’s efforts.
Freshman Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine)
followed Humphrey’s lead at No. 6 singles by claiming a 6-2
win in the first set over Clayton State’s Jessica Budd. Once
again, a point would be unable to be acquired by the Pacers, but
Gale made Budd earn her 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory.
The nationally-ranked Pacer men and the USC Aiken women will travel
to Dahlonega, Ga. tomorrow to square off against North Georgia. The
matches are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 20.
