Five Pacer Tennis Student-Athletes Chosen PBC All-Academic

2010 PBC All-Academic Tennis Teams

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Five USC Aiken tennis student-athletes were chosen to the 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Men's and Women's Tennis Teams it was announced by the league office on Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

USC Aiken had three student-athletes selected to the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis All-Academic team with Stephanie Humphrey and Brittany Telford earning first team plaudits. Mathilde Grenet was chosen to the second team. All three are now two-time winners of the award as they were also named All-Academic by the PBC after the 2009 season.

USC Aiken's Filipe Garcia and Juan Guglielmeti were both tabbed to the 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference Men's Tennis All-Academic team. Garcia was tabbed as a first team selection, while Guglielmeti was placed on the second team. Garcia claims the honor for the second consecutive season.

Playing mainly at No. 2 singles, Humphrey concluded her 2010 season with a 7-12 singles record. In doubles, Humphrey and partner Maria Angel (Rosario, Argentina) were 13-7 overall.  Humphrey and Angel became the winningest doubles team in Pacer history in the 2010 spring campaign. The duo has claimed 26 doubles victories together over the last two seasons.

A native of Harpendon, England, Humphrey, a sophomore, currently owns a 3.804 Grade Point Average as a Communications major.

A senior, Telford concludes her Pacer career with 44 singles wins, which is good for fifth place all-time in school history. Telford along with doubles partner Grenet with 15 doubles wins together are also tied for fifth place in school history in doubles wins as a tandem.

This past season, Telford, playing mainly at No. 4 singles, ended her year with a 10-10 mark in singles.

In the classroom, Telford (Newmarket, Canada) continued to thrive as she currently boasts a 3.871 GPA as a Biology major.

A native of Doumont, France, Grenet finished her career as a Pacer with a 4-13 record in singles in 2010. All of her singles matches were at No. 1 singles. She and Telford were 4-11 at No. 1 doubles.

Grenet, who ends her career with the eighth-most singles wins in Pacer history at 39, will graduate from USC Aiken with a Business Administration and Marketing degree. She currently has a GPA of 3.644.

Garcia played mostly at No. 4 singles during the 2010 spring campaign. He enters USC Aiken's NCAA Tournament appearance tomorrow (Thursday) with an 11-8 overall record. He teamed with three doubles partners to go 11-9 in doubles in 2010.

A senior from Valinhos, Brazil, Garcia is a Business Administration and Marketing major with a 3.536 GPA.

Guglielmeti is a junior from Mar del Plata, Argentina. He currently owns a 3.221 GPA as a Business Administration and Marketing major.

Playing mostly at No. 6 singles, Guglielmeti enters USC Aiken's NCAA Tournament match with a team second-best 13-7 record in singles. Guglielmeti, who has won seven of his last 10 matches, was a team-best 6-3 in PBC action during the 2010 regular season. He is presently 8-6 with Garcia in doubles.

The teams are part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the teams.

Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 28 NCAA Division II National Championships. The PBC features 13 member institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama that compete in 13 championship sports. The 2009-10 members of the PBC are Augusta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Clayton State University, Columbus State University, Flagler College, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Lander University, University of Montevallo, North Georgia College & State University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
