Braves Hold Off Pacers

Box Score

PEMBROKE, N.C. - A Jennifer Goodwin tally in the second half was not enough for the Pacers in their upset bid against UNC Pembroke with the Braves earning a narrow 2-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over the Pacers at the Varsity Grounds.

The Pacers trailing UNCP 2-0 at intermission, Goodwin (Walterboro, S.C./Colleton County) scored the Pacers only goal of the match just under seven minutes into the second half. She was assisted by Jenny Pineiro (Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester).

The Pacers kept pushing for the equalizer the rest of the second half, but the Braves were able to withstand USC Aiken's advances for the 2-1 victory. USC Aiken was also able to debunk any UNCP ideas of further extending their lead at the same time with some strong defense and some good goalkeeping by Nicole Westphal (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic).

Anna Svensson scored both of UNC Pembroke's goals in the match, netting the eventual game-winner in the 43rd-minute.

The loss was USC Aiken's fifth consecutive, leaving the Pacers 2-8 (0-5 PBC) entering their next match against new league rival Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. on Saturday, Oct. 10. UNC Pembroke improved to 7-3-1 (2-2-1 PBC) with the victory.

In total, UNC Pembroke took 27 shots compared to USC Aiken's six. The Braves owned a slight 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
