Falcons Escape With Narrow 1-0 Victory Over the Pacers
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken goalkeeper Nicole Westphal saved seven of the 14 shots she faced on Wednesday, but one of the 14 went into the back of the net to give host Pfeiffer a narrow 1-0 win over the Pacers.
Westphal (Paul VI Catholic High School) logged all 90 minutes between the pipes for USC Aiken in the loss. Pfeiffer's lone goal in the contest came a little under five minutes into the second stanza when Alyssa Wembell secured her third goal of the year. Wembell was assisted by Brianne Cleary on the game winner.
The Pacers had a few quality chances in the match, but Pfeiffer netminder Jamie Alcala saved four of USC Aiken's eight total shots to acquire the shutout victory.
Overall, Pfeiffer finished with six more shots than the Pacers at 14-8. The Falcons held a narrow advantage in corner kicks as well, taking four to USC Aiken's three in the match.
Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C./Summerville) led the Pacers in the match with three total shots. Two of her shots were saves by Alcala.
The Pacers were looking for their second consecutive victory in the match. The loss drops them to 1-2 on the 2009 campaign. Pfeiffer improves to 2-1-1 on the young season with the win over the Pacers.
USC Aiken will next play their first home match of the 2009 campaign against Peach Belt Conference rival North Georgia at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12.
