Pacer Season Concludes With Heartbreaking Loss to GCSU

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The 2009 USC Aiken women's soccer season ended in heartbreak on Wednesday with Georgia College & State procuring a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pacers at Bobcat Field.

The match-winner came off a Bobcat free kick with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime. The free kick would hit the crossbar and bounce right on to the head of GCSU's Megan McAlpin, who took advantage of her opportunity by calmly heading the ball into the back of the net for the 2-1 victory.

The first goal of the match came via the Bobcats in the 85th-minute. The Pacers seemingly heading towards their fifth straight 90-minute regulation shutout, GCSU scored to take the one-goal advantage that they felt would take them to victory.

The GCSU tally ended a tremendous season-ending stretch by the Pacer defensive unit of not allowing a goal. The Pacer defense had not given up a goal in just over 501 minutes before surrendering the first goal of the match to the Bobcats.

The Pacers would not go down in the match without a fight with Jenny Pineiro (Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the 2009 season. Pineiro took advantage of spotty GCSU defense just over 30 seconds after the GCSU tally to tie the game when she took hold of a failed GCSU clearance attempt that left her alone with an empty net.

The loss concluded the 2009 USC Aiken women's soccer campaign with the Pacers owning a 6-11 record overall. The loss to GCSU snapped a four-match winning streak for the Pacers.

The Pacers with the loss to GCSU on Wednesday evening ended the 2009 Peach Belt Conference season with a 2-8 record. In a season full of being right there for the Pacer women, USC Aiken ended its 2009 Peach Belt Conference slate having been on the losing side of three overtime games in PBC action.

In total, USC Aiken finished its 2009 season with nine one-goal losses. The Pacers lost six of their eight games in PBC play by just one goal.
