Schirmer Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team
AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball player Deandra Schirmer was named to the Capital One District Three Women's Basketball Academic All-District Third Team in the college division on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The College Division team combines NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Schirmer is a senior Business Administration major at USC Aiken. She currently boasts a 3.938 grade point average. She is the sole representative from the Peach Belt Conference on the Academic All-District Three team.
The Holton, Kan. native has been a two-year starter for the Pacers since joining the program out of Cloud County Community College prior to the start of the 2009-10 season.
This season, Schirmer is averaging 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She has obtained over half of her rebounds on the offensive glass with 58 of her 110 rebounds through 22 games coming on offense.
Schirmer is currently shooting 50.5 percent (50 of 99) from the field in the 2010-11 season.
Schirmer has acquired double figures in seven games in 2010-11 for USC Aiken. She had a season-high 15 points in a win over then No. 25 Francis Marion at the Convocation Center on Dec. 1, 2010. She also had seven rebounds in the Pacer victory.
Schirmer brought down 10 rebounds in USC Aiken's narrow loss to current national No. 2 Clayton State on national television on Jan. 15, 2011.
Last year as a junior, Schirmer averaged 5.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Schirmer and the 16th-ranked Pacers are currently 18-4 on the 2010-11 season. USC Aiken is 10-2 in Peach Belt Conference action.
USC Aiken will remain at home for their next contest on Monday, Feb. 7 when the Saints of Flagler march into the Convocation Center for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The game will be the first of a league doubleheader as the Pacer men will tangle with the Saints shortly after the conclusion of the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
At halftime of the men's game, USC Aiken will retire the No. 18 jersey of three-time All-American catcher and 2009 USC Aiken graduate Jessica Strickland. Strickland will join Pacer great Jami Cornwell as the only two Pacer softball players to have their jerseys retired.
