AIKEN, S.C. – India Kornegay dealt her third career no-hitter and the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept a doubleheader from North Greenville on Wednesday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.
Behind Kornegay's no-hitter USC Aiken (8-3-1) earned a 1-0 victory in game one. They then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a dramatic 4-3 victory over North Greenville (1-5) in game two.
USC Aiken, with the sweep, has now claimed eight straight positive results (7-0-1).
USC Aiken will next close out its week by playing in the Mid-South Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3.
The Pacers will open the Mid-South Classic by taking on Wingate at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. The Pacers will then close out the first day of the tournament by facing off against Newberry at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.
USC Aiken will commence the second day of the Mid-South Classic on Sunday, March 3 by squaring off against Bellarmine at 12 p.m. The Pacers will close out the tournament with a 4 p.m. contest against Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, March 3.
Game One: USC Aiken 1, North Greenville 0
The reigning Peach Belt Conference pitcher of the week, Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) finished her no-hitter in game one by striking out 10 Crusaders. Kornegay is now 4-2 on the 2013 season.
USC Aiken picked up the only run it would need in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Nicole Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) drove in the game-winning run for USC Aiken when she singled in Sarah Montei (Summerville, S.C./Summerville HS), who doubled to kick things off in the inning.
USC Aiken closed out its win over North Greenville in game one with three hits.
Montei, Borden and Victoria Burkett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) obtained a single hit each in the Pacer victory.
Rachel Glazebrook suffered the loss in game one for the Crusaders in the circle. She struck out seven Pacers.
Game Two: USC Aiken 4, North Greenville 3
Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Kaitlyn White (McAllen, Texas/College of Charleston) started the action for USC Aiken in the inning by singling.
After she stole second she was brought home on an error by North Greenville. Shortly thereafter, Borden doubled in Montei to make the score 3-3.
USC Aiken and North Greenville both had eight hits in game two.
Williamson was 2-for-2 in the game with one run scored.
Glazebrook led North Greenville in game two with two hits.
Glazebrook (1-3) once again took the loss in the circle for North Greenville.
Taylor Morgan (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) acquired the win in the circle in game two. Morgan (4-1) fanned eight Crusaders.
