AIKEN, S.C. – Another thrilling day at J.H. Satcher Field ended with the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team staying undefeated on the young 2012 season.
The Pacers swept Erskine (1-7) on Wednesday with the Pacers earning a 2-1 nine-inning victory in the first game. In the second game, USC Aiken (6-0) erased a onetime 4-0 deficit to pick up a 6-5 victory.
Erskine would even the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the ninth inning when Hillary Stewart blasted a home run to left field to obtain a 2-1 win for USC Aiken. Stewart's dinger marked her second straight game-winning hit for USC Aiken.
Stewart (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood HS) was the only Pacer to claim multiple hits in game one with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI.
No Erskine player was able to acquire multiple hits.
Both teams ended game one with six hits.
Pacer ace India Kornegay dealt all nine innings in the circle, fanning 14.
In the second game, USC Aiken was down 4-0 after just two innings.
The Pacers would tie the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fourth with four runs of their own.
The score would be 5-5 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Bossle then scored the game-winning run for USC Aiken in the bottom of the sixth.
Kornegay (6-0) then struck out two of the last three batters for the Flying Fleet in top of the ninth to ensure a Pacer win.
Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) ended the second game with eight strikeouts. She pitched the final five innings.
Three Pacers claimed multiple hits in game two with Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS), Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State College) and Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) all notching two hits.
USC Aiken ended the second game out-hitting Erskine, 10-7.
The Pacers will next close their week by opening Peach Belt Conference play against Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. on Saturday, Feb. 25. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
