Freshman Kornegay Tabbed League’s Pitcher of the Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of South Carolina Aiken freshman pitcher India Kornegay was named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 15, 2011 it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

The Eufaula, Ala. native made her debut inside the circle for head coach Jerry Snyder’s softball squad this past weekend and lived up to her hype as one of the best pitchers to come out of the state of Alabama. USC Aiken’s Feb. 14, 2011 South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week, Kornegay concluded her first weekend in a Pacer uniform with a perfect 2-0 record as USC Aiken’s game one starter in both doubleheaders over the past weekend.

In her collegiate debut inside the circle for the Pacers on Saturday, Feb. 12 against Brevard, Kornegay pitched lights out, delivering a stellar performance to record the win as she just missed out on recording the most strikeouts in a game in school history as she fanned 14 batters including nine in the first three innings. Her 14 strikeouts in the eventual 1-0 nine-inning game one win over Brevard were one shy of the record of 15 strikeouts most recently set by Stacie Oakley in a game against Mars Hill on Feb. 10, 2006.

The Eufaula High School product continued to impress on Sunday, Feb. 13 recording her second win of the season in USC Aiken’s 10-2 five-inning game one win over Shaw. In her four innings of work, Kornegay struck out six batters and did not relinquish a hit or run until the fourth inning.

In total on the week, Kornegay had 20 strikeouts in 13 innings in the circle. She finished her first weekend in a Pacer uniform with a 0.54 ERA.
