Flessate Named USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week
AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken softball player Toni Flessate was chosen as the USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week on April 19, 2010. Flessate has now won the award in two of the last three weeks.
In USC Aiken’s run through the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament, the senior dual threat almost single-handedly led the Pacers to the championship round. In the Pacers’ five tournament games she went 3-2 in the circle with 24 total strikeouts. Just as impressive on offense, she was .308 with two RBIs and one run scored over the course of the weekend.
On Saturday, Apr. 17, she pitched in three straight games, setting two season bests for most strikeouts in a game. In the Pacers’ 2-1 win over Lander, Flessate fanned nine batters and then followed that up by striking out 11 in the Pacers’ 9-1 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State later that afternoon.
Flessate’s win over Lander in the Pacers’ first game on Saturday marked a special accomplishment as she set a new school record for most career wins in a career. The win was her 14th of the season and her 53rd career win.
Flessate will graduate from USC Aiken with her name etched in the record books in the top-five of 10 different softball pitching categories including being in the top-two in eight of those categories including first in wins (54), innings pitched (625.1), appearances (104), shutouts (15). She is second all-time in opponents’ batting average (.227), strikeouts (421), games started (85) and complete games (72).
The USC Aiken Student Athlete of the Week award is a newly created award for the 2009-10 athletic year. Each week the USC Aiken athletic department is going to honor one individual from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort.
