Pacer Men’s Tennis All-Decade Team Announced
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken athletic department and head coach Steve Dahm released the 2000-10 Men’s Tennis All-Decade team on Monday, June 20, 2011.
The 2000-10 USC Aiken Men’s Tennis All-Decade team features six singles student-athletes and three doubles teams.
"It's an honor to say that I have coached the guys on this list,” noted Dahm. “Not only do these student-athletes possess an incredible athletic aptitude, but they are genuinely good people.”
Bruno Seves (2007-09) ended his playing career at USC Aiken with a record of 50-9 in singles matches. The two-time All-America selection was tabbed the 2009 USC Aiken Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Seves owns the school record for most wins at No. 1 singles (16 - 2009) and No. 2 singles (18 - 2007) in a single season. He owns the overall school career record for most wins at No. 2 singles with 31. His winning percentage of .889 (16-2) in 2008 is also the best in Pacer men’s tennis history.
A member of the Pacer men’s tennis program for two years, Harshit Sharma (2003-04) was USC Aiken’s No. 1 singles player in the 2004 season. In 2004, Sharma finished his season with a 16-4 singles record, with 14 of those wins coming in the number one singles spot.
Gregory Andrade (2009-pres.) just completed his third season with the Pacers. The two-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection finished the 2011 season ranked nationally in both singles and doubles. He has 29 wins in singles in his career with the majority of his matches coming at No. 1 singles.
Andrade and doubles teammate Juan Xavier Ponce were named All-Americans in doubles after the 2010 season. The tandem concluded their first year as a duo ranked ninth nationally by the ITA. The tandem finished the 2010 campaign with an 18-5 record. Playing all of their matches at No. 1 doubles, Andrade and Ponce won 11 straight matches at one point during the 2010 season.â¨
Pierre Negri (2004-07) ended his Pacer career second all-time in career wins in singles wins with 51. His best season for the Pacers came in his senior season in 2007 when he claimed 16 wins.
Chris Kaetz (2006-09) concluded his career with USC Aiken with 49 career wins in singles. Kaetz owns the school record for wins at No. 4 singles (21). He is tied for the school record for wins at No. 5 singles with 16.
Tied with Kaetz for most wins at No. 5 singles, Fernando Blanco (2004-05) was a member of the USC Aiken men’s tennis team for two years.
Dagoberto Darezzo (2006-09) and Ed Horne (2006-09) were both named All-Americans at the end of USC Aiken’s magical 2009 campaign. Darezzo and Horne finished 2009 at 15-4. The Pacers’ tandem at No. 1 doubles all of 2009, Horne and Darezzo concluded the Peach Belt Conference regular season with a 5-1 league mark. The duo was a second team All-PBC selection in the spring of 2009. Horne and Darezzo ended the 2009 campaign ranked ninth in NCAA Division II.
The tandem finished their careers with the most wins as a doubles team in school history with 60. Darezzo owns the school record for most doubles wins in a career with 66, while Horne amassed 65 wins in total in his doubles career. Both are also in the top five in school history in singles wins. Darezzo owns the most wins in singles in Pacer men’s tennis history with 56, while Horne is tied for fourth with 49.
Nicholas Lombardo (2003-06) and Fernando Guevera (2003-05) were two of the better doubles players in school history. Lombardo ended his career with 46 doubles wins. Guevera and Negri won 16 doubles matches as a tandem.
Kiril Popov (2000-03) and Will Elliot (1999-2002) are the final members of the USC Aiken 2000-10 All-Decade team. Elliott concluded his Pacer career in the top three in school history in total wins in doubles with 53.
The head coaches of each of USC Aiken’s teams selected the 2000-10 USC Aiken Athletic Department All-Decade teams.
Each team for each of the 11 sports will be comprised of the number of student-athletes that start a game or a match.
Over the course of the coming weeks, an All-Decade team will be released each week by the USC Aiken athletic department.
