USC Aiken Concludes Regular Season on Three-Match Winning Streak

WINGATE, N.C. – The 26th-ranked USC Aiken men’s tennis team concluded its regular season with an impressive 7-2 victory over regionally-ranked Wingate on Thursday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex.

The victory leaves the Pacers ending the regular season in the midst of a three-match winning streak. The Pacers have won four of their last five overall.

The Pacers bookended their regular season with victories over Wingate. The Pacers opened their 2010 campaign with a 6-3 win over the Bulldogs on Feb. 3 before closing the regular season with a 7-2 win over the Bulldogs.

USC Aiken enters the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday with a record of 11-10 on the year.

Wingate’s loss to the Pacers snapped its nine-match winning streak. They finish the regular season with a 13-4 record overall.

USC Aiken concluded doubles owning a 2-1 advantage. The Pacers would go on to win all but one of the singles matches.

The 26th-ranked USC Aiken men’s tennis team does not get a respite as the eighth-seeded Pacers open the 2010 PBC Championship at 12 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 16 against top-seeded and national No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State at the Clayton County Tennis Center.

The winner of the USC Aiken-Armstrong Atlantic State quarterfinal will move on to square off against the winner of the #4 Francis Marion-#5 Flagler quarterfinal in the semifinal round, which will be contested at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 17.

Armstrong Atlantic State, which bested the Pacers 9-0 earlier this season in Savannah, Ga., is vying for its sixth consecutive Peach Belt Conference Tournament title. The Pirates finished the 2010 regular season at 24-1 en route to their fifth straight league regular season championship.

The PBC Tournament format has changed for this year. Instead of all conference teams advancing to tournament play, only the top eight seeds will vie for the championship.

All quarterfinal rounds will be played on Friday starting at noon with the semifinals on Saturday.

The PBC Championship match will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all matches is free.
