Pacers Fall to Flagler in League Opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The University of South Carolina Aiken men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2010 Peach Belt Conference season with losses to Flagler on Saturday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.

The 17th-ranked USC Aiken men were upset by the 34th-ranked Flagler men, 5-4, while the Pacer women fell 8-1 to the 46th-ranked Flagler women.

The nationally-ranked USC Aiken men are now 3-2 (0-1 PBC) on the 2010 season. The Pacer women are now 2-2 (0-1 PBC).

USC Aiken's men's tennis surrendered the first two flights in doubles on Saturday, but they were able to acquire a win at No. 3 doubles with the Pacer tandem of Filipe Garcia and Juan Guglielmeti defeating Flagler's No. 3 doubles duo of Peter Coulis and Stephen Coulis, 8-4.

The two losses in doubles weighed heavily entering singles. USC Aiken would not be able to take four of six in singles to suffer the overall loss. The Pacers lost the top three singles flights with Garcia (Valinhos, Brazil) earning the Pacers' first win at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win over Peter Coulis. Ben Klass (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) then downed Flagler's Tim Hansson at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3, before Guglielmeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina) picked up USC Aiken's final win of the day at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Stephen Coulis.

The lone victory for the Pacer women came at No. 2 doubles with Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England) and Maria Angel (Rosario, Argentina) combining for an 8-4 win over Flagler's second doubles duo of Jennifer Saviano and Chelsea Taylor.

USC Aiken's week concludes on Sunday with an extremely tough double dip.

The USC Aiken men and women will open the day by taking on Peach Belt Conference foe and men's and women's national No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.

The same day, USC Aiken will stay in Savannah to tangle with one of the top NAIA programs in men's and women's tennis. The NCAA Division II 17th-ranked USC Aiken men will be playing the NAIA 19th-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design, while the Pacer women will be taking the court against the NAIA No. 9 SCAD women. The action is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
