MORROW, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team rolled to a 4-1 victory over Pfeiffer in its season opener on Friday evening at Laker Field.
The match was USC Aiken's first game in the 2011 Laker Soccer Shootout.
USC Aiken led from start-to-finish in its 4-1 victory.
Scott Newby (Leicestershire, United Kingdom/Wreake Valley) got things going in the match extremely early when he scored just 46 seconds into the contest. He was assisted by Steven Campbell (Augusta, Ga./Reinhardt).
USC Aiken extended its lead to 2-0 in the 19th-minute when Troy Watson scored the first of his two goals on the evening. Watson (Kingston, Jamaica/Montreat) took a pass from Newby that he easily then hit off the right post into the back of the net.
Pfeiffer would pull within two at 3-1 just under 20 minutes later, but Watson scored an unassisted goal in the 88th-minute to end the evening with USC Aiken garnering a 4-1 win.
USC Aiken finished the match out-shooting the Falcons, 24-8. USC Aiken held a 7-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
USC Aiken will close the Laker Soccer Shootout against regional power Anderson at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Pacers are 5-2 all-time against the Trojans.
Just two days after the Clayton State Tournament, USC Aiken will open play in 2011 at the "Pacer Pit" with the first of a season-high three consecutive home matches. On Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5, USC Aiken will play host to Palm Beach Atlantic at 6 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
