Welborn Named Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week
AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of South Carolina Aiken junior golfer Taylor Welborn was chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week by the league office on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011.
Welborn kicked off his Pacer career strongly by winning the Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational at the 6,875 yard, par 72 Cougar Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Welborn (LaGrange, Ga./Darton) posted a final two-round tally of 5-under 139 (68-71) to best Georgia Southwestern's JP Griffin (140) by one stroke.
The two entered the final round of play tied after carding 68s in the first round of action. Welborn's 71 in the second round bested Griffin's 72 in round two by one stroke, allowing Welborn to secure individual medalist honors.
Welborn and nationally 18th-ranked USC Aiken will
next travel to play in the SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate at the
par 72 Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. The
tournament will take place on Monday, Sept. 12 and Tuesday, Sept.
13.
The Pacers are six-time champions in the event, having last won
the tournament in 2006. USC Aiken claimed the crown in the
tournament five-straight times from 1992-96.
