USC Aiken 18th in Golf World/Nike Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll

NEW YORK – The University of South Carolina Aiken golf team is 18th in the Golf World/Nike Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll that was released on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011.

USC Aiken is one of five Peach Belt Conference teams ranked in the preseason tally with Columbus State (13th), Georgia College (14th), Armstrong Atlantic State (19th) and Flagler (22nd) also earning preseason recognition in the top 25.

The USC Aiken golf team was ranked 23rd in the final Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA Division II Coaches’ Poll of the 2011 spring season.

The 2010-11 USC Aiken golf team was extremely young with no upperclassmen on the squad.

Despite their youth, the Pacers concluded the spring of 2011 by making their 19th appearance in the NCAA Division II regionals in the last 20 years.

USC Aiken will open its 2011-12 season by playing host to the Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational on Monday, Sept. 5 and Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The two-day, Eighth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational will be contested at the 6,875 yard, par 72 Cougar Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Designed by Gary Player, the course was rated at "4.5 stars" by Golf Digest. The South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association recently rated the Cougar Point Golf Course the “Golf Course of the Year.”

The tournament will be a two-round, 36-hole event (18 each day). Action is slated to get underway at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 5.

USC Aiken has won the event three times before (2004, 2005 and 2008).

The preseason poll combined the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The complete results, including results from Divisions I, III, NAIA and NJCAA will appear in the Sept. 5, 2011 issue of Golf World.
