AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Alabama is in the lead after the first two rounds of action at the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the 6,617-yard par 70 Palmetto Golf Club.
Ranked No. 3 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin College Team Performance Index, Alabama has a two-round team tally of 565. The Crimson Tide opened the tournament with a 288 in the first round before posting a 277 in the second round of action.
Alabama is presently four strokes ahead of second place Liberty (285-284=569). Virginia (291-280) and Clemson (285-286) are tied for third at 571.
Defending champion Chattanooga is in fifth place at 574 (280-294).
Bud Cauley of Alabama at 132 is the leader through the first two rounds of play. Cauley posted a 66 in both the first and second round on Monday.
East Carolina's Harold Varner (71-67), Clemson's Crawford Reeves (69-69) and Liberty's Preston Dembowiak (70-68) are tied for second at 138.
The host Pacers are presently ninth with a team total score through two rounds of 579. USC Aiken opened with a 296 in round one before improving by 13 strokes in round two with a 283.
Sophomore Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky. /Henderson State) is leading the Pacer charge. Atkins posted USC Aiken's low round of the 2010-11 season in round two on Monday, carding a 67. Atkins in currently in 12th at 142 (75-67).
USC Aiken has two players in the top 15 as Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) is tied with seven others for 13th at 143. Letein opened with an even par 70 in round one before posting a 73 in round two.
The third and final round of the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8.
