Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches’ Poll (4/27)
NEW YORK – The University of South Carolina Aiken golf team is ranked 22nd in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches’ Poll of the spring of 2011.
USC Aiken will next make its 19th appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament in the last 20 years.
The Pacers are one of six Peach Belt Conference teams ranked in the latest top 25 with Georgia College (seventh), Columbus State (13th), Armstrong Atlantic State (15th), UNC Pembroke (20th) and Flagler (21st) all joining the Pacers in national poll.
Central Oklahoma is currently the No. 1 team in the country, while Lynn is presently second. Chico State is third.
The NCAA Division II field features 80 teams and 32 individual student-athletes overall. The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 16-20 at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Florence, Alabama. The finals will be hosted by the University of North Alabama.
USC Aiken will be vying to make its 16th appearance in the NCAA Championship Tournament in the regional.
The Pacers are the ninth seed in the South/Southeast Regional, which will be contested May 2-4 at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla.
USC Aiken under Hall of Fame head coach Mike Carlisle in the NCAA Division II Tournament has three NCAA Division II National Championships (2004, 2005, 2006) and three NCAA Division II runner-up finishes (1995, 1996 and 1999).
In the past seven years, USC Aiken has five NCAA National Championships, three team titles and two individual crowns. In 2008, USC Aiken finished seventh as a team at the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament, but Jeff Goff became the school's second ever NCAA Individual Champion. Goff joined Dane Burkhart as the only Pacers to claim individual medalist honors at the NCAA Championship Tournament in program history.
The 2010-11 USC Aiken golf team is extremely young with no upperclassmen on the squad.
Freshman Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) has paced USC Aiken all spring. The All-Peach Conference selection is leading the Pacers with a 74.0 scoring average.
