Schulte and Pacers Finish Second at Southeast Regional Preview
CLEMMONS, N.C. - The 16th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken golf team finished the third and final round of the Will Wilson NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Preview at the par 70 Tanglewood Championship Course in second place.
USC Aiken carded a final score of 881 (301-292-288) to finish the event in second. The Pacers moved up six places over the final two days. USC Aiken finished the first round in eighth place. The Pacers surged up the leaderboard to a tie for fourth in the second round before moving up two more spots on the final day.
The second place finish was the best team finish of the fall for the Pacers.
The Pacers as a team played well in the fall with USC Aiken finishing in the top 10 in three of its four events, which includes a third place finish as a team at the Francis Marion Springhill Suites Intercollegiate in Florence, S.C.
The final event of the fall was important for the Pacers in that it gave the Pacers a chance to see the course where the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional will be played in the spring of 2010.
Frederik Schulte (Koln, Germany/Herzogenaurach) led the Pacers in the event, concluding his efforts in the three-day event with a three-day tally of 211 (71-72-68). The 211 left him tied with two others for second place.
In total, four Pacers ended the preview in the top 26. Kevin Grady (Woodbine, Md./Century) tallied a three-round score of 224 (78-74-72) to finish in a tie for 22nd. Justin Thompson (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) and Mark Dickson (Edinburgh, Scotland/Firrhill) both carded three-day totals of 225 to finish tied for 26th individually.
Flagler's Chris Bray claimed individual medalist honors at the preview, carding a three-round total of 210 (73-66-71). Barton claimed the team crown by finishing just two strokes ahead of the Pacers at 879 (299-284-296).
The Pacers will open their 2010 spring campaign on Feb. 21, 2010 by participating in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Pacers won the 2009 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, which is hosted by Francis Marion.
