Thompson Finishes Tied for 18th at State Farm Laker Invitational

Final Results

HAMPTON, Ga. - Justin Thompson fired a three-under-par 69 in the final round to finish in a tie for 18th place at the Second Annual State Farm Laker Invitational at the par 72, 7,202-yard Crystal Lake Golf and Country Club.

The reigning Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week, Thompson (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) improved 33 places from his standing of 51st after the first round. Thompson carded a three-over-par 75 in the first round. The two-day output left him with a total score of 144.

USC Aiken had three players conclude the event in the top 50 individually with Grant Carnie (Aberdeenshire, Scotland/Brevard) finishing the event in a tie for 33rd place with a two-round tally of 146 (71-75). Frederik Schulte (Koln, Germany/Herzogenaurach) carded a 74 for the second consecutive round on Tuesday to end his efforts at the event with a two-day output of 148, which left him in a tie for 45th.

The 10th-ranked Pacers did not have their best output as a team at the event, finishing 14th with a total team tally of 589 (294-295).

Newberry College carded the team low round of the tournament in the second and final round to claim top honors as a team. Newberry's 14-under-par team score of 562 left them four strokes ahead of second-place and NCAA Division II top-ranked Georgia College & State.

Barry's Chris Carlin claimed individual medalist honors at the Second Annual State Farm Laker Invitational with a two-day tally of 133 (67-66).

The Second Annual State Farm Laker Invitational was originally scheduled to feature 54 holes, but inclement weather on Monday forced it to be a 36-hole affair.

USC Aiken will next close out its 2009 fall schedule by playing in the three-day NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Preview at the par 72 Tanglewood Park Championship Course in Clemmons, N.C. The tournament will be hosted by Belmont Abbey.

The event is important in that it will give the Pacers a chance to see the course where the Division II Southeast Regional will be played in the spring of 2010.
