Pacers in Eighth Place After Two Rounds of Administaff Augusta State Invitational

Second Round Results

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 23rd-ranked USC Aiken golf team is in a tie for eighth place after two rounds of the 2010 Administaff Augusta State Invitational at the par 72, 7,161-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.

USC Aiken opened its day on Saturday by collecting a cumulative team tally of 289 in the first round. The Pacers followed up the first round 289 by carding a team collective score of 282 in the second round. The 282 tied for the second-lowest team single round of the year for the Pacers. The Pacers also acquired a 282 in the first round of the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate on Sept. 14. USC Aiken’s low round of the year was the 278 it commandeered in the second round of the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate.

The Pacers’ aggregate score of 571 through two rounds ties them with NCAA Division I top 20 programs Illinois and Alabama.

USC Aiken was led through the first two rounds by Justin Thompson (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta), who finished his day on Saturday with a two-round total of four-under-par 140.  The score tied him with four others for 17th place individually.

Thompson began his day with an even par 72 in the first round, but he improved by four strokes in the second round with a 68. He made six birdies in the second round en route to the 68, which ties for his low round of the year.

USC Aiken had three players finish the first two rounds in the top 50 individually. Frederik Schulte (Koln, Germany/Herzogenaurach) was consistent through the first two rounds, posting a 72 in each round to sit tied with five others for a two-round score of 144.

Gaines Milliner (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) posted a two-round tally of 145 (73-72) to end the first two rounds tied with 11 others for 47th.

Defending champion Augusta State is the leader through the first two rounds. The Jaguars opened the event with a first round 274 as a team before shooting a team score of 270 in the second round for a two-round total of 544. The score leaves the Jaguars eight strokes ahead of current second place team South Carolina (552). The Gamecocks fired a 266 as a team in the second round to put themselves in contention for the team title.

Augusta State’s Patrick Reed is the leader through the first two rounds. Reed commenced Saturday with a six-under-par 66 in the first round before firing a five-under-par 67 in the second round. Reed’s two-round tally of 133 leaves him two strokes ahead of current second-place individual Bud Cauley of Alabama. Cauley is just one week removed from claiming the individual title in the 2010 Linger Longer Invitational.

The third and final round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 4.
