Diaz Ends Career as Four-Time All-America Selection
NORMAN, Okla. – University of South Carolina Aiken golfer Roberto Diaz became the program’s third four-time NCAA Division II All-America selection when the second, third and honorable mention Division II Ping All-America teams were announced on Wednesday, June 10.
For the second consecutive season, Diaz was a second team selection. He joins former Pacers Brian Kassel (1993-96) and Jamie Stanley (1994-97) as the only Pacers to earn All-America honors in all four of their seasons in the program.
In addition to being a second team selection for the past two seasons, Diaz (Veracruz, Mexico) was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2007 and a third team All-American in 2006.
He was not
the only Pacer honored with All-America plaudits on Wednesday as
J.P. Solis (Morelia, Mexico) was named an honorable mention
All-American. Solis gives the Pacers 45 NCAA All-Americans in the
program’s history.
Both Diaz and Solis were also chosen Ping All-Southeast Region team
members as well.
Diaz was named All-Peach Belt Conference earlier this spring, ending his Pacer career as a four-time All-PBC selection. The senior was also named All-PBC in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He is the program’s first ever four-time All-PBC selection.
Diaz was
named the Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week three times
during the 2008-09 season.
He concluded his final season with the Pacers with four top five
finishes and nine top 20 finishes in the 2008-09 season.
Diaz, who is tied for fifth in school history in career wins,
picked up his fourth career individual title at the Wexford
Plantation Intercollegiate on Feb. 24.
Diaz’s
71.90 scoring average in 31 rounds in 2008-09 is the third lowest
single season scoring average in program history.
Overall, Diaz ends his Pacer career as the all-time career scoring
leader in school history at 72.97 in 130 rounds played.
Also an All-PBC performer, Solis, who had six top 10 finishes,
owned a stroke average of 72.88 in 2008-09.
Solis obtained his best finish of the year at the Kiawah Island Invitational on Sept. 9. He finished tied for first at the event with a two-round score of 133 (64-69).
Solis shot an
opening round 64 at the tournament. The 64 left him tied with Diaz
for low round of the year. Diaz carded an opening round 64 at the
Administaff/ASU Invitational.
The 64s tied them with Stanley, who shot a 64 in 1995, for low
round in school history.
USC Aiken, who was ranked first for much of the 2008-09 golf
season, claimed four regular season tournaments in the 2008-09
season.
The Pacers won two tournaments each during the fall and spring.
USC Aiken opened the 2008-09 year by taking team honors at the Kiawah Island Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Pacers also won the highly competitive NCAA Division II Aflac/Cougar Invitational hosted by Columbus State in Oct. of 2008.
USC Aiken
acquired two NCAA Division I tournament wins in the spring of 2009.
The Pacers opened their spring campaign by taking top honors as a
team at both the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by
Francis Marion and the 12th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto
Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
