AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken head men’s basketball coach Vince Alexander released the 2011-12 Pacer men’s basketball schedule on Thursday, July 21, 2011.
The 2011-12 USC Aiken men’s basketball schedule features a strong non-conference schedule along with the always extremely tough Peach Belt Conference slate.
“Once again we have a challenging non-conference schedule which we feel will prepare us for the always tough Peach Belt Conference,” noted Alexander. “We are looking forward to getting things rolling and bouncing back from what we believe was a disappointing 2010-11 season.”
For the second consecutive season, USC Aiken will open its regular season at home against Voorhees. The Pacers and Tigers are scheduled to tip things off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Last year, USC Aiken easily downed Voorhees in its season opener, winning 108-63 on Nov. 17, 2010.
A few days later, USC Aiken will hit the road for the first time in the 2011-12 regular season for a contest with first-time opponent Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, N.C. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
The Pacers will stay on the road after the contest with the Vikings for a road date with Mars Hill in Mars Hill, N.C. at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The Pacers and the Lions have met on the hardwood 13 times before with USC Aiken owning a 12-1 all-time series advantage. USC Aiken bested Mars Hill 101-86 last year at the Convocation Center on Dec. 30, 2010.
The Pacers will play six of its seven games in the month of December inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center.
USC Aiken’s first game in the final month of the 2011 calendar year begins with a season-long six-game homestand. The first foe for the Pacers in the month will be Allen at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. USC Aiken is 12-0 all-time against Allen.
Two days after facing off against Allen, USC Aiken will welcome another school from South Carolina’s capital city in Benedict at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Pacers own a 4-3 all-times series lead over Benedict, having won the last three in the series.
After a week off to focus on exams, USC Aiken will open Peach Belt Conference play in the 2011-12 season against Flagler at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. A few days later, USC Aiken will face off against Armstrong Atlantic State at the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14.
USC Aiken will close things out before departing for its holiday break by playing host to the USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic for the second straight year. More information on the 2011 event will be made available in the future, but this year’s tournament will feature host USC Aiken, Lenoir-Rhyne, Virginia Union and Elizabeth City State.
The Pacers will return from their holiday break for a contest against Virginia Union in Richmond, Va. on Friday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. It is the second ever meeting between the two programs. Last year in the first ever meeting, USC Aiken knocked off then No. 23 Virginia Union, 69-62, in its second game of the inaugural USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic at the Convocation Center.
The Virginia Union game is USC Aiken’s final non-conference contest of the 2011-12 regular season.
USC Aiken will commence the 2012 portion of their schedule on Jan. 4 against league foe Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. Tip-off between the two league and state rivals is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The Pacers will play Columbus State in their first home Peach Belt Conference game in 2012. Tip-off in the match-up between the league rivals is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7. A week later, USC Aiken will travel to Milledgeville, Ga. for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Georgia College.
USC Aiken will play the first of its two games against rival Augusta State at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16. USC Aiken has claimed all the games at home in the series since the opening of the Convocation Center prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. Augusta State has been ranked in the top 10 in each Pacer victory.
After a road trip to Pembroke, N.C. to square off against league foe UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.), USC Aiken will play two consecutive Peach Belt Conference home games. The two home games are the first of four straight games against Peach Belt Conference West Division opposition.
North Georgia will first pay a visit to the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21. Just two days later, USC Aiken will welcome Georgia Southwestern to its home facility for a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday, Jan. 23.
USC Aiken hits the road for four straight contests after the Georgia Southwestern game, beginning with a 8:30 p.m. EST game against Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. on Thursday, Jan. 28. The Pacers will make a stop in Morrow, Ga. on the way back to face off against league rival Clayton State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The Pacers open up the month of February and close out their tough road stretch with road league games against Armstrong Atlantic State on Feb. 4 (7:30 p.m.) and Lander on Feb. 8 (7:30 p.m.)
USC Aiken will conclude its 2011-12 regular season by playing three of its final five games of the year at home. UNC Pembroke will first visit the Convocation Center for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 11.
After the second game of the year between USC Aiken and rival Augusta State at the Christenberry Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, USC Aiken will host its final two regular season home games of the year.
Lander will be USC Aiken’s opponent for the Pacers’ final weekend home game of the year at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. A few days later, USC Aiken will close the curtains on its home slate with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Francis Marion on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
The Pacers will conclude their 2011-12 regular season on the road against Flagler at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 in St. Augustine, Fla.
As a team overall in the 2010-11 season the Pacers finished second in the Peach Belt Conference East Division with a 10-8 mark in league play.
USC Aiken concluded the year with a 17-10 record overall. The 17 wins leave the Pacers having won a school-record 89 games over the last four seasons.
The Pacers were the national leaders in blocked shots per game in the 2011-12 season, blocking an average of 6.1 shots per game.
