Nelson Selected South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week

AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball player Re’mon Nelson was named the South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week on Dec. 18, 2011.

Nelson concluded USC Aiken’s three wins last week averaging 15.7 points, 3.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. He came off the bench to pour in double figures in all thee of the Pacer wins.

Nelson finished his week shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the field. He only missed one free throw on the week, connecting on 13 of his 14 attempts (92.9 percent).

A junior guard out of Columbus, Ohio, Nelson opened last week by scoring a team-high 19 points in just 15 minutes on the floor in USC Aiken’s 103-81 Peach Belt Conference victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at the Convocation Center. Nelson was 8-for-10 from the field in the game.

Nelson next helped USC Aiken to a thrilling comeback win over Elizabeth City State in its first game of the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic at the Convocation Center on Friday, Dec. 16. Nelson entered the final 3:37 of the game scoreless. He then proceeded to score 11 points over the course of the final minutes of the game to lead the Pacers to a 67-65 win. He hit the game-winning jumper with 10 seconds remaining.

In USC Aiken’s final game of the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic against Virginia Union on Saturday, Dec. 17, Nelson led the Pacers in their 81-62 win over Virginia Union with 17 points. Nelson was 5-for-11 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. He also had four assists and four steals.

For his efforts over the course of the two-day 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic, Nelson was chosen as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
