Council Sets PBC Record for Consecutive Free Throws Made

AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken senior guard Sterling Council recently set the new standard in the Peach Belt Conference for consecutive free throws made with 51.

Council entered USC Aiken’s victory over Georgia Southwestern on Monday having made the 51 straight free throws. He missed his first free throw in the game to snap the impressive streak of free throws made.

Council eventually finished the Georgia Southwestern game 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Council is currently second in NCAA Division II with a 94.4 percent (67-for-71) free throw shooting percentage.

Council is also the current USC Aiken school record holder in career free throw percentage. The Camden, S.C. native has made 90.2 percent (184-of-204) of his free throws in his career.

Council joins USC Aiken women’s basketball leading scorer Meredith Legg (2005-09) as tops in Peach Belt Conference history in consecutive free throws made. Legg opened her career by making a Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball-best 45 straight free throws.

Council and the nationally 24th-ranked USC Aiken men’s basketball team will next hit the road for a battle of the current top teams in the Peach Belt Conference East and West Divisions. USC Aiken's showdown with Montevallo is slated to tip off at 8:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, Jan. 26 in Montevallo, Ala.
