Nationally-Ranked Pacers Come up Short; Drop Series Finale to Augusta State in Extra Innings

AIKEN, S.C. – Two runs in the 11th inning helped drive the Augusta State Jaguars past the 12th-ranked USC Aiken baseball team in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Jaguars took the game 4-3 in 11 innings to avoid the sweep, but USC Aiken was able to claim the series by winning two on Saturday, Apr. 10.

Augusta State improves to 13-25 overall on the season and 4-14 in the PBC. USC Aiken is now 27-13 overall on the 2010 campaign and 14-7 in conference play.

Augusta State’s designated hitter Carl Burrow gave the Jaguars the early lead when he sent a ball over the left field wall to put the score at 1-0 in the fourth frame.

Travis Howard (Bonneau, S.C./USC Salkehatchie) answered in the next half inning when he sent a ball just fair down the left field line for a double scoring Bill Rice (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester County) all the way from first who reached by singling through the right side.

Gary Asbill (Batesburg, S.C./Batesburg-Leesville) later scored Howard who had moved over to third on a wild pitch to give the Pacers their first lead of the day at 2-1.

Augusta State tied the game in the top of the eighth inning off a sacrifice fly by Phillip Anchors to score Burrow.

The Jaguars were able to capitalize in extra innings pushing two runs across in the 11th inning.

In the bottom of the inning Nick Aranas (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) raced across the plate to bring the score back within one off a single to the gap in right-center field by Asbill. Despite their efforts at the plate, the Pacers were not able to overcome the final one run deficit in the waning moments of the game.

Chase Johnston earned the win for Augusta State in four innings. He is now 1-4 for the season. Chad Benefield (Dallas, Ga./Southern Union) suffered the loss on the mound for the Pacers after pitching two innings. He falls to 0-1 on the year.

The Pacers will now hit the road, traveling to Savannah, Ga. for a Peach Belt Conference weekend series against PBC foe Armstrong Atlantic State on Friday, Apr. 16 and Saturday, Apr. 17. The series will begin with a single game on Friday starting at 3 p.m. and will end with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
