WILSON, N.C.--USC Aiken’s men’s tennis team competed in the Division II Wilson/ITA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships this weekend in Wilson, N.C. The event was hosted by Barton College. Sophomore Pierre Negri advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket and junior Carlos Huerta made it to the quarterfinals. Junior Fernando Guevara made it to the round of 32 in the winners bracket.

Negri lost in the first round in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) to Kevin Taylor of Francis Marion and dropped to the consolation bracket. After receiving a bye in the first consolation round, Negri beat Matt Byford of Coker College (6-2, 6-0) in round two and USC Upstate’s Sandy Shatz by default in the quarterfinals. Negri’s run came to an end in the semifinals against Jan Greef of Columbus State. Greef downed the USCA sophomore by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

Guevara was the only Pacer to advance in the winners’ bracket. Guevara beat Igor Prielozny of Francis Marion, 7-6 and 6-1, before falling to Felipe Castanheira of Lees-McRae in the second round.

Huerta earned two victories in the consolation bracket on his way to the quarterfinals. He beat Georgia College & State University’s Mariano Cebrian (6-3, 6-3) and Augusta State’s Mike Vandenabeele (6-1, 6-3) before falling to CSU’s Greef (6-2, 7-6).

In doubles action, Nicolas Lombardo and Huerta advanced to the round of 16 by beating a Mount Olive College duo by a score of 8-4.

A first round bye in the consolation bracket allowed the team of Guevara and Negri to play in the second round. However, their day ended with an 8-4 loss to Ross Hopper and David Secker of Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The Pacers will finish off their fall season on Oct. 15-17 when they participate in the NTC Tournament hosted by Augusta State University in Augusta, Ga.
