AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (1-6-1, 0-1-0 PBC)
was 1:32 away from pulling off the biggest win in the men’s soccer
program’s 15-year NCAA history on Saturday evening. Sixth-ranked
Clayton State (6-2-2, 2-0-0 PBC) tied the match with 92 seconds to play
and then found the game winner nearly eight minutes into overtime to
survive a potential stunner with a 3-2 victory. The match was the Peach
Belt Conference opener for the Pacers.
Clayton State got some early offense off the foot of Victor Duncan (5) who converted
a long pass in by Josh Stewart to beat goalkeeper Harold Tate one on one in the
fourth minute for the 1-0 lead.
Emmanuel Maduka (4) evened the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute after taking the
ball off a defender’s foot, beating keeper Richard Vasconcellos, and banging
it into the open net. Junior Tommy Rushing (1) tallied his first goal as a Pacer
in the 37th minute when he slipped one inside the right corner off a Georgi Peev
cross to put USCA in front 2-1.
That score stood until the final two minutes of play. After dodging some bullets,
the Pacers were unable to keep the Lakers from scoring the equalizer, which came
in the form of a Jarrid Nicholson (1) marker. Clayton State out shot the Pacers
12-1 in the second half and 19-6 for the match.
With 2:28 remaining in the first overtime period, B.J. Livingston played a cross
to Tonny Madegwa (1) who headed in the game winner.
Tate made a number of huge stops in net for the Pacers, finishing with six saves
in nearly 98 minutes worth of work.
Vasconcellos stopped two shots in net for the Lakers before giving way to Daniel
English in the second half who did not record a save.
The physical match witnessed 46 fouls and five cautions.
USC Aiken will step back out of conference and travel to face Newberry College
on Monday, October 3 at 4:00 PM. Clayton State will also travel out of conference
to play at Montevallo on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00 PM.
