AIKEN, S.C.--Mount Olive (4-0-0) scored
one goal in each half en route to 2-0 win over USC Aiken (1-4-1) in men’s
non-conference soccer action on Thursday night in Aiken, S.C. The loss
extended the Pacers scoreless streak to three games and snapped a four-game
winning streak against the Trojans. USCA is 6-2-1 now all-time versus
Mount Olive.
Wood Stillery (2) came off the bench in the first stanza to head in the first
goal of the game in the 33rd minute. Chris Varela served up a cross from the
right wing for Stillery to punch home. USCA had a chance to score first, but
Eugene Phillips’ penalty kick in the opening 15 minutes was blocked by
goalkeeper Chris Roush.
In a hard fought second half, the Pacers had some scoring opportunities but were
unable to cash them in. Reid Clewis (4) caught Marcos Rodriguez out of the net
playing a ball in the 82nd minute and lofted the insurance marker over his head
for the goal. Clewis finished with five of the team’s 15 shots. The Pacers
managed just seven shots with Svetlin Penchev attempting two of them.
Harold Tate made three saves, allowing one goal, in 45 minutes of action while
Rodriguez stopped six shots giving up the one goal in 45 minutes in net.
Roush notched the shutout for Mount Olive recording two saves.
USC Aiken will have a 13-day layoff before their next action on Wednesday, September
21 when the Pacers host Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) at 7:00 PM.
Mount Olive continues its four-game road swing playing at Erskine on Saturday,
September 10 at 7:00 PM in their Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference opener.
