PACERS' COMEBACK RUNS SHORT ON TIME IN OPENER
USC AIKEN MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-1 DECISION TO QUEENS

MORROW, Ga.--Queens University of Charlotte (1-0-0) opened up a two goal lead and then held off a second-half USC Aiken (0-1-0) rally to post a 2-1 win over the Pacers in both teams’ 2005 season openers in the first match of the Clayton State Tournament. It marked the first meeting in 14 years between the programs.

Queen’s Matt Herbstritt scored the first of his two goals on the evening in the 13th minute. His shot from eight yards out off the Demetrius Donald pass beat Pacer goalkeeper Marcos Rodriguez for the match’s first tally.

After a 1-0 Royals’ lead at the break, Queens struck again in the 55th minute when Herbstritt banged home a rebound goal off keeper Harold Tate’s defection to make it 2-0. Queens out shot the Pacers 12-8 and held a dominating 9-0 edge in corner kicks. USCA was whistled for 15 fouls compared to six for Queens.

The Pacers made a late charge with Eugene Philips’ goal in the 74th minute. Off an Emmanuel Maduka cross, Philips’ banked one off the upper right post, beating Royals’ goalkeeper Bruce Mottern to cut the deficit to 2-1. Time ran out, however, on the comeback effort.

All three keepers used recorded one save each while the Pacers’ Adam Lambert led all players with three shots on goal.
