SPARTANBURG, S.C.--Jorge Atehortua scored
two goals to lead sixth-ranked USC Upstate (11-1-2, 3-0-2 PBC) to a 3-1
win over the visiting USC Aiken Pacers (2-10-2, 1-3-0 PBC) in men’s
Peach Belt Conference soccer action at County University Stadium in Spartanburg,
S.C. The Pacers have now lost seven-straight to the perennial soccer
national power.
Artehortua got the Spartans on the board in the seventh minute beating goalkeeper
Marcos Rodriguez one on one. Chris Baretta netted the eventual game winner in
the 18th minute, giving USC Upstate the 2-0 halftime advantage.
Artehortua struck again in the 55th minute to make it 3-0. Emmanual Maduka (7)
scored his second goal in as many games to draw the Pacers within 3-1 in the
59th minute. Adie Hailat crossed the ball in from the left and Maduka beat keeper
Ryan Cooper to the far post for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Despite playing the Spartans even over the final 45 minutes, it wasn’t
enough as USC Upstate improves to 17-1-0 in the all-time series with USCA.
Rodriguez recorded seven saves in net for USCA while Cooper stopped four shots
for USC Upstate. The Spartans will take on Clayton State next Saturday in Morrow,
Ga. with the winner taking home the 2005 PBC Championship.
USC Aiken will play at Lander on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 PM.
