NEWBERRY, S.C.--One second-half goal by
Newberry College (5-4-1) proved to be the difference on Monday evening
as the Indians posted a 1-0 victory over USC Aiken (1-7-1) in men’s
non-conference soccer action. The win was the first-ever by the Indians
over the Pacers in six all-time meetings.
Midfielder Ricardo Silveira headed in the match’s only goal in the 57th
minute of play off Robbie Getsinger’s pass. For the match, Newberry out
shot USC Aiken 17-8 and held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Harold Tate stopped three shots in net for the Pacers allowing just the one goal
in nearly 69 minutes. Marcos Rodriguez recorded two saves in 21 minutes of relief.
Terrance Dieterich and Bryan Linn split the shut out in goal for Newberry combining
for three saves.
Emmanual Maduka, the Pacers’ leading scorer, led USCA with three shots
including two on goal.
USC Aiken returns home to host Pfeiffer on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 PM.
