LAKELAND, FLA--Just over 12 hours after
suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Florida Southern, the USC Aiken
Pacers (3-1-1) bounced back with a 1-0 blanking of Saint Thomas Aquinas
(0-2-0) in men’s non-conference soccer action in Lakeland, Fla.
on Sunday afternoon. It was the Pacers’ first-ever meeting with
a school from the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.
USC Aiken, at 3-1-1, is off to its best start through five games since the 1994
squad opened 4-1-0.
After 83 scoreless minutes, Mamadou Ndoye was awarded a penalty kick. The 6-6
senior from Dakar, Senegal made the most of his opportunity by beating Sean McEnery
in net for the game winner at 83:15. It was Ndoye’s second marker of the
season, both of which have come on penalty kicks.
Of the nine shots mustered by St. Thomas Aquinas, only two were on net, one each
by Jonathan Galeano and Steven Ocampo.
Marcos Rodriguez, Zac Van Frank, and Jason Vik combined in net for the Pacers
in the shutout.
USC Aiken finished with a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 12-9 edge in shots.
The Pacers return home to host rival USC Upstate (formerly USC Spartanburg) on
Saturday, September 18 at 3:30 PM. This will be the Peach Belt Conference opener
for both teams.
