AIKEN, SC--After failing to win a match
in 2003, newcomer Joseph Cawley and the USC Aiken Pacers (1-0-0) wasted
little time in starting the 2004 season off on a winning note. Cawley’s
game winner seven minutes into overtime lifted USCA to a 2-1 victory
over Brewton-Parker (0-1-0) in Thursday night’s men’s soccer
season-opener at “Pacer Pit”.
Dating back to the 2002 season, the Pacers last posted a on November 5, 2002
in a 2-1 upset of seventh-ranked North Florida in the opening round of the Peach
Belt Conference Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., a span of 12 matches. USCA’s
last overtime win came on September 1, 2001 with a 2-1 win over Mount Olive College.
Cawley (1), one of three brothers in the lineup for head coach Ike Ofoje, beat
Barons' goalkeeper Zach Brunner from 12 yards out straight on, off a nice feed
from Mamadou Ndoye in the 97th minute.
Brunner played well in goal for Brewton-Parker allowing just two goals and recording
10 saves. USCA outshot the Barons 22-11.
Emmanuel Maduka (1) scored the Pacers’ first goal of the season in the
33rd minute of play. Mamadou Samba played the ball into Maduka who beat Brunner
from a sharp left angle inside the box.
Sergio St. Hill knotted the game up at 1-1 in the 59th minute of play after capitalizing
on a giveaway by the USCA defense, beating Harold Tate from 25 yards out. Tate
allowed just the one goal and registered four saves in his Pacer debut in goal.
Just before half, Brewton-Parker had a chance to tie the game before intermission
when they were awarded a rare indirect kick from only eight yards away. Jonathan
Gustard’s attempt sailed high, however, with 2:38 remaining in the half.
Eugene Eshun-Philips nearly gave the Pacers the lead with less than
20 minutes left in the match, but his rebound attempt hit the far right
part of the crossbar and deflected out.
With their first season opening win in four years, the Pacers will look to
continue their good start on Wednesday, September 1 when they host Lees-McRae
College at 5:00 PM.
