KIAWAH ISLAND,
S.C.--The USC Aiken men’s golf team opened up defense of
its 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship on Monday in the first
round of the Kiawah Island Invitational. The Pacers are hosting the
36-hole tournament and are tied with fellow Peach Belt Conference member
UNC Pembroke in first place at 20-over-par.
This inaugural two-day event is being contested at the 6,887 yard, par 72 Cougar
Point Golf Course. Designed by Gary Player, the course was rated “4.5 stars” by
Golf Digest in 2004.
“The staff here at Cougar Point did a phenomenal job getting this course
playable for today’s first round,” said USCA head coach Michael Carlisle
via phone. “We were playing in the midst of a hurricane today with driving
wind and rain and this course held up magnificently. My hat is off to them.”
As Hurricane Frances came ashore in Florida over the Labor Day weekend, the outer
bands of the massive system reached into coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina.
All five Pacers are tied for 18th or better with 18 holes to play. UNC Pembroke’s
Rex Willoughby carded an opening round two-under-par 70 to lead the pack. He
is the only golfer in the 55-player field to post red figures.
Newcomer Tyler Rolley led USCA on day one with a three-over-par 75 to sit tied
for fifth with UNCP’s Greg Dobbins and Aingus McAllister of Francis Marion.
Junior Scott Brown is tied for eighth after firing a five-over-par 77.
A pair of Pacer freshman, Chris McAlister and James Browning, are tied for 11th
with five other players after opening with six-over-par 78’s. Junior Dane
Burkhart is currently tied for 18th with Carter Collins and Daniel Sosebee of
Georgia College & State University at seven-over-par 79.
Following USCA (+20) and UNC Pembroke (+20) in the team standings is Francis
Marion (+23), Carson-Newman (+26), Pfeiffer (+28), GC&SU (+28), Presbyterian
(+35), Catawba (+39), Lenoir-Rhyne (+41), Belmont-Abbey (+44), and Clayton
State (+55).
