SOPHOMORE JAMES McGHEE RECORDS THIRD CAREER TOP 20 FINISH

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC--USC Aiken carded a 23-over-par team total of 311 in the final round Tuesday to finish 12th at the Cleveland Golf / Kiawah Island Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Charleston. Sophomore James McGhee was the top Pacer firing a two-day total of three-over-par 147 to place tied for 17th.

Originally scheduled for 54-holes until yesterday’s second round was washed out by torrential rain, the shortened 36-hole tournament was contested at the 7,061 yard, par 72 Turtle Point Golf Club.

The University of Kentucky entered the day tied for fifth, six shots off the pace set by Mississippi. But a six-under-par team total of 282, the best of the tournament, propelled the Wildcats up the leaderboard into first place. UK finished at 580 or four-over-par for the tournament. Georgia State was second, three strokes back, while Georgia Southern was one more shot behind at eight-over-par.

The two-time defending champion College of Charleston Cougars placed tied for eighth with Maryland and first-round leader Mississippi at 22-over-par. USCA, 37-over-par, beat out University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) by four shots and Charleston Southern by 16.

McGhee finished tied for 67th at 23-over-par is in Pacer debut at this tournament last fall. In this year’s version, he was the Pacers’ top performer recording his third career top 20 finish. Dane Burkhart followed up yesterday’s 75 with a four-over-par 76 to place tied for 32nd. After a strong opening round of 73, freshman Clint Smith fell to 50th place following an 83.

Bryan Sangid and Sam Mason both improved on Monday’s rounds with a 78 and an 84 to place tied for 59th and 74th respectively.

As a team, USCA finished tied for eighth in 2002.

Georgia Southern’s Aron Price carded a two-under-par 70 to finish at nine-under-par and outdistance UK’s John Holmes by five strokes.

USC Aiken will next compete in the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Intercollegiate hosted by Pfeiffer University on September 16-17 in Uwarrie Point, NC.
